The Neoclassical style of art of the 17th century was a revival of the spirit and aesthetics of Ancient Greek and Roman art. In this style, figures were idealized by making the subjects look younger, more athletic, beautiful and statuesque. This was the Photoshop of its time! Two of this styles most recognized artists were Jaques-Louis David and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres.

In an assignment for my Master Artist Program, we had to do a portrait in the Neoclassical style. Rather than making myself look younger and flawless, I chose to interpret "idealization" slightly different. Since I chose to do a self-portrait as an Aikidoka (a practitioner of the martial art, Aikido), I felt that the idealization had to reflect the ideals of a martial artist. Rather than youth and beauty, I chose wisdom, experience, maturity, and mastery. However, these qualities only come with age.

So here is my Neoclassical self-portrait of old sensei Sameer. Hopefully at this age, I will have acquired some degree of wisdom, skill and maturity to go along with my wrinkles and grey hair.
