I think it was Bach who said, “Music is the space between the notes.”
Likewise, this painting is a study of economy and restraint- fewer but more expressive brushstrokes. Like Bach’s quote, this painting was the result of more mental space between the application of each mark. “What is essential? What can be left out?” were the questions I kept asking myself as I painted. Ironically, these are the same questions I’m asking myself in other areas of my life. Here is a portrait of my friend, Dan after Aikido class.
